If you did not know, New York City now requires for you to obtain a permit before taking photographs in the city

Although the information in the law is vague about when you need a permit, after speaking with the Mayor's Office, I was told that the rule is:

If you are using a professional camera and / or a tripod, you need a permit. If you are using any kind of lights, except for a camera mounted flash, you need a permit. If a police officer wants to bust your chops, you need a permit.

There is no clear definition, so if you are doing a model shoot on the city streets, be safe and get the permit.

It would be interesting to see what they consider a professional camera. Will local law enforcement be carrying booklets to look up every brand and style of camera

They'll probably go with the old rule we used at the one hour lab for copywork:

"If it looks Professional, it IS Professional"

So I guess if your gonna lug an SLR to NYC you need a permit. Looks like another reason not to go to me.

What I have always run into when I do concert photography is that they consider a professional camera one that has interchangable lenses.

I live in NYC it's a beautiful w/ asses for leaders. I have a Canon Rebel XTi and that is not a pro camera. This is crazy! I’m really starting to hate NYC.

Good to know how much things have changed in the city. I just started to process the paper work for Press Passes in the city and that is a real nightmare..
